Don Kehn page
This website is a rebirth of the original site that alerted many of the Next of Kin of the crew to the circumstances surrounding the loss of their loved ones. One of our goals was to get a factual account of their last battle published. Goal reached 2008 with Don Kehn's work "Blue Sea of Blood".
This story took decades to
materialize for the Next of Kin of the USS Edsall's crew and the general public.
Japanese war records were seized at the end of the war and not returned for some ten to fifteen years or so. Japanese scholars compiled and organized these records and began publishing them in the sixties.
It wasn't until the seventies before translations were begun. At the behest of the Wild family, next of kin of Lt. Wild who was serving on the Edsall during her last fight, Admiral Layton located and translated the Battle report of Japanese Battleship Division three. One of the three divisions involved with engaging the USS Edsall.
Ms. Skip Wild Harrington another Wild family member wrote an account of the battle which appeared in the Naval Academy's Shipmate magazine in 1980 about the same time as my father, who was in the US Embassy in Tokyo serving as chief MAAG, received the copy and was able to interview some of the Japanese veterans involved in the battle. (you can find this in my comments
in the Don Kehn page).
